Caroline Lange: Fleisher’s Beef Butchery 101
Okay, well, I won’t actually be at this event — because I went last year, and I want there to be more room in the class for everyone who’s not yet had the opportunity to try out butchery. The Fleisher’s team is wonderful: warm and friendly and funny enough to make a vegetarian like myself feel, if not at home, much more comfortable than I would have expected to be as I took a knife to a massive, pink side of pig. I cannot understate what a great experience it was, or how thoughtful the instructors are, taking care to tell us about the juncture of animal anatomy and cuts of meat, their relationship with their farmers, their take on the grass-fed/grain-fed debate and their insistence on animal welfare.
Lauren Wilson: Tarot Tuesday at Victory Garden
I’ve always wanted to have someone draw tarot cards for me, and all the better with a little goat milk soft serve. Victory Garden is one of my West Village favorites that’s known for some funky, pungent and seasonal swirls made with local nanny milk. They’ve hosted “Tarot Tuesdays” for the month of January in an attempt to do something “happy and free of Seasonal Affective Disorder.” Lay the crumbled halva garnish and cartomancy on me.
Gabrielle Langholtz: NY Drinks NY
Restaurants, bottle shops and bars all over town increasingly offer New York wines. But on Tuesday, March 10, you can taste more than 150 of them in one place: the annual “NY Drinks NY” grand tasting at the Astor Center. More than 35 winemakers from the Finger Lakes, Long Island, Niagara Escarpment and beyond — including Bedell, Channing Daughters, Macari, Red Newt, Benmarl, Brooklyn Oenology and many others — will pour their best bottles, representing a wide diversity of varietals and styles that you can ask them about while you swirl and sip. Pace yourself with — what else? — New York cheese and charcuterie. Tickets start at $30.
Ruth Temianka: Sell It Like It Is!
There are always so many interesting things happening on the New York food scene that it’s hard to get around to tasting, sampling or experiencing all of them! However a great cross-section of food entrepreneurs happen to be appearing at Edible‘s “Sell It Like It Is” event on February 4. I’ll be looking to learn more about their mission and personal journeys. If that wasn’t good enough I’m still lusting after a cherry and chocolate dessert sampled at Reynard restaurant opposite the Brooklyn Brewery. Might just be the perfect decadent backdrop for mulling over some memories afterwards…
Tove Danovich: Romance and Revenge—Aphrodisiacs and Female Poisoners
What could be better for the non-sappy than a pre-Valentine’s event focused on food poisoning and aphrodisiacs? The free talk is part of Brooklyn Brainery’s Masters of Social Gastronomy series which explores a different food talk every month. Finally, we can get to the bottom of whether oysters, a tiger’s nether regions or even chocolate is the best amorous aid. For those who are less about cupid than Singles Awareness Day, the next portion of the talk will focus on the obsession Victorians had over femme fatales of the most literal kind — poisoners. The event will be held at Littlefield Bar in Brooklyn so all you 21+’s can join me in raucous glee over the foods you’ll need when love goes right or wrong.
