In the spirit of fostering both virtual and real-life exploration, we’re bringing you Instagram accounts you can follow for inspiration every week—whether that’s to make a meal, find a specialty grocer or have a fun night out. This week, we’ve rounded up some of the best farms in the Hudson Valley to visit for apple-picking (we’ve got some additional recs here, too). Check out this story from our sister magazine Edible Long Island to read about a great farm out east.

Fishkill Farms

This third-generation farm in East Fishkill, NY, has an orchard where you can pick Cortland, Gala and Fuji varieties. For those of you who want a two-for-one, they’ve also got pumpkins. Make sure you pick up apple cider doughnuts at the farm store, too.

Prospect Hill Orchards

In Milton, NY, you can visit Prospect Hill Orchards. They’re another family-owned farm, growing Honey Crisp, Gala, McIntosh and Macoun apples along with Bosc pears. For those who really like to get in the fall spirit, there are also hayrides and a corn maze. Like Fishkill and all good orchards, they also have apple cider doughnuts. You’re not doing fall right without eating some.

Samascott Orchards

At Samascott Orchards in Kinderhook, NY, you can pick way more than apples and pumpkins. They’ve got grapes, broccoli, Swiss chard and a whole host of other vegetables that you can get your hands dirty with. If you just want pie material, though, the apples on offer are Akane, Gala, Honeycrisp, Macs, Cortland and Fuji varieties. And of course: When you stop into the farm store, replenish your energy with apple cider doughnuts. Fall only happens once a year!

Twin Star Orchards

New Paltz, NY, is my personal favorite Hudson Valley town. It’s the perfect blend of new and classic hippie with all the trappings of a college town, from great record shops to some excellent vegan stops. They’ve also got Twin Star Orchards, where not only can you enjoy apple picking (varieties include McIntosh, Gala, Fuji, Macoun, Cortland, Red Delicious, Jonamac, Jonagold and Empire) but they also serve wood-fired pizza and burgers, as well as a tasting room for their Brooklyn Cider House hard ciders—coming to Bushwick soon.
